FRANCAIS : If you going down to San Francisco tour (and back!)

December 10, 2007 Je viens juste de rentrer d'une tournée en solo de Portland à San Francisco. J'étais sur la route pendant un peu plus d'une semaine (pour plus de 2 000 kilomètres de conduite...pfff...!). J'ai fait des rencontres intéressantes et découvert des paysages fascinants. Voici mon voyage jour par jour illustré par des vidéos "faîtes maison" 1er JOUR, 1er Novembre 2007 : de PORTLAND à SALEM (OREGON)Je quitte Portland en milieu d'après midi dans ma super "Subaru", direction Salem, la capitale de l'Oregon. Le trajet n'a pas été trop long et j'ai eu la chance de partir juste à temps pour éviter les embouteillages.J'arrive à Boon's Treasury, une ancienne banque reconvertie en pub, 2 heures avant mon concert. Le point d'orgue de la soirée était un jam avec Diane une violoniste rencontrée quelques semaines plus tôt à Portland lors d'une réunion au syndicat des musiciens. Nous avons repris quelques unes de mes chansons (l'animal blessé, le petit prince) mais aussi des chansons de Gainsbourg et de Noir Desir. C'est toujours un réel plaisir de partager la scène avec un musicien talentueux. Les chansons que j'ai souvent l'habitude de reprendre prennent une autre dimension. Voici donc une vidéo de "Comme elle vient de Noir Desir" reprise sauce maison. Lorsque j'étais sur Paris, Tétard reprennait souvent cette chanson de cette façon. j'ai trouvé son interprétation si géniale que lors de certains de mes concerts, je fais de même. C'est parti : |

Hello, I just returned from a solo tour from Portland, Oregon to San Francisco, California. I was on the road for a little over a week and drove over 1 500 miles (pfff...). I met some great people and saw beautiful places. I wanted to share all that with you. Here is a video diary of that journey... Day 1, November 1st 2007 : PORTLAND TO SALEM (OREGON)I left Portland mid afternoon, in my "Subaru space shuttle", direction Salem, the state capital of Oregon. I was a short drive. I just made it through avoiding trafic. I arrived at Boon's Treasury in Salem 2 hours before the gig which gave me time to set up and chill out. The show was fun. The high point of the evening was me playing with Diane a very talented fiddle player. I met her at the Musician Union in Portland a few weeks before and told her to come with her instrument when I was in Salem so we could play some tunes together. We did a few of my songs (l'aminal blessé, le petit priince) and a few French cover songs of Noir Desir and Gainsbourg also. It's always a pleasure sharing my music with other musicians. 2ème JOUR, 2 Nov : De SALEM (OR) à MC KINLEYVILLE (CA)J'avais une longue journée devant moi. Je descendais au Sud par l'autoroute I5, traversais Eugene (prononcé IOUDJINE) et Grand Pass. Arrivé dans cette dernière je prennais vers l'Ouest sur Highway 101 qui longe l'océan Pacifique ! Bon voyage : |
After the show, I went to sleep at Harry Poter's house ! A little house made all in wood with a fire place and books everywhere. Harry (who' real name is Julian) sells healthy food in a coffe house in Salem. A very nice guy that moved from the East coast to Salem to be with people that shared the same values he had about having a more healthy life. His motto was to enjoy food by taking the time to eat and experiencing the flavour of each ingredient. Stress makes you crave junk food, taking time to relax and eat makes you travel !
I love being on the road for that because you always meet interesting people from whom you learn a lot. DAY 2, Nov 2nd : SALEM (OR) TO MC KINLEYVILLE (CA)After leaving Harry Poter, I had a long day of driving ahead of me. I first drove South down I5 through Eugene and then through Grant Pass. I then took a right heading West towards I 101. What an amazing drive it was...hello the Pacific Ocean here I come !! |

Après avoir fait 10 heures de route et une sieste bien mérritée au bord de l'océan, j'arrive à 6 river Brewery tavern pour y faire mon concert. L'endroit était blindé. Je me suis bien marré et le staff était très sympa. Les vibes étaient différentes de celle de l'Oregon (plus de T-shirts, de lunettes de soleils, de shorts et de blonds !) J'étais en Californie ! Petit rituel artistique inévitable : je reprennais "Otherside" des Red Hot Chili Peppers, obligé ! Ce soir là j'ai dormi chez deux étudiants (Pilar et Andrew) du coin rencontré par l'intermédiaire de Couchsurfing.com.
Une belle rencontre. On a passé la soirée à discuter de tout et de rien. Pilar m'a gentiment proposé de dormir dans son lit (sans elle ! C'est quoi ces pensées !! lol) et le lendemain matin en ouvrant les yeux je découvris, accroché au mur, le poster d'un homme totalement à poil avec (hummmmm disons..) un organe assez imposant ! Je tournais la tête et découvriS de l'autre côté une peinture de picasso...C'est sûr cela allait être une journée intéressant ! :) 3ème JOUR, 3 Nov : De ARCATA (CA) à SAN FRANCISCO (CA) :Ce fut une autre longue journée de conduite. After sleeping an hour in the car, just near the beach, I arrived at the 6 river Brewery tavern to do my concert. The place was packed. I had a great time and the staff was really friendly. That night I slept in Arcata at Pilar and Andrew's place, some students I met through Couchsurfing.com
They were very nice people. I was a blast to chit chat late that evening with them. Pilar kindly let me sleep in her bed (a single bed ! so I was alone, What were you thinking !!). When I woke up the next morning, opening my eyes I was staring at a poster calendar with a totally naked guy on it. What a wake up call !! lol. I turned over to the other side and saw a picasso painting. I knew it was going to be a good day in the USA ! :-) DAY 3, Nov 3rd : ARCATA (CA) TO SAN FRANCISCO (CA) :I had another long day of driving in front of me. What a big country ! My best friends that day were the highway 1, the Pacific Ocean, and the Sequoya trees. It could be worse !! Here is some footage of that great drive, enjoy ! |
4ème JOUR, 4 Nov, SAN FRANCISCO (CA) :Après m'être reposé quelques heures à San Francisco, je me dirigeais vers une église communautaire pour y faire mon premier concert dans cette super ville. C'est une ville qui a un tel héritage culturel et musical que l'idée d'y chanter mes chansons m'excitaitBruno Pelletier-Bacquaert (http://www.brunojazz.com), un jazzman français rencontré par l'intermédiaire du syndicat des musiciens local, avait organisé le concert dans ce lieu communautaire appelé "Center for Spiritual living of San Francisco". La tentation était grande de jouer "Sympathy for the Devil des Stones" lol ! Je resitais ! :) A la place on reprennait, accompagné de Bruno, les feuilles mortes de Serge Gainsbourg : |
DAY 4, Nov 4th, SAN FRANCISCO (CA) :After hanging out in San Francisco for a few hours, I headed out to go and do my first concert ever in San Francisco. There is so much culture and a great musical past in that city that I was really excited about the idea.Bruno Pelletier-Bacquaert (http://www.brunojazz.com) a very talented French Jazz musician that I met with the help of the local musician Union had organizd a concert for both of us in a community church in SF. I did not play Sympathy for the devil of the Rolling Stones (I'll wait to be in a cathedral for that ! lol) but had a chance to do a cover of Serge Gainsbourg with Bruno. |

6ème JOUR, 6 Nov, SAN FRANCISCO (CA) :Une laverie et une salle de concert dans un même lieu ? c'est le concept de Brainwash Café. Tu y vas pour laver ton ton linge et en patientant, tu bois une bière et écoute un concert. Ce soir là le concert c'était moi !! |
DAY 6, Nov 6th, SAN FRANCISCO (CA) :I did a concert that night in a very unusual place : the Brainwash Café that is also a laundromat. A simple idea : you go there to wash you laundry and while you are waiting you have a beer and listen to a show. That night I was the show !! |
7ème JOUR, 7 Nov : de SAN FRANCISCO (CA) à COTTAGE GROVE (OR)Je quitte SF de bon matin dans son fameux brouillardLa remonté vers le Nord par l'autoroute I5 n'est pas aussi excitante que la descente par I 101. Dis Mdame l'Autoroute dessine moi une courbe ? Un genoux sur la volant et la voiture en pilote automatique je me remettais à apprendre l'harmonica...et m'ennuyais un peu...Mon Dieu que ce pays est grand... Après 10 heures de route j'arrive enfin à Cottage Grove dans l'Oregon. Le lieu où j'allais passé la soirée à jouer (the Axe and Fiddle) est un caf'concerts dans lequel il y a un magasin de livres et une boulangerie. 3 en un ! Après mon concert j'ai eu la chance de rencontrer une des personnes les plus intéressantes de mon voyage : MJ WIENS, un talentueux artiste peintre originaire de l'Oklahoma avec un accent tout droit sorti d'un film des frères Cohen. DAY 7, Nov 7th : SAN FRANCISCO (CA) TO COTTAGE GROVE (OR)I leave SF early the next morning heading North. Foggy weather...The drive up I5 was not a fun as the drive down I 101. When was the last time I saw a curve in the road ? I forgot !! Since I was board I decided to improve my harmonica skills. One knee on the wheel, the cruise control on and here we go... After 10 hours of driving I finally arrive in quiet Cottage Grove, Oregon. I was happy to be back in beautiful Oregon. The venue in Cottage Grove (the Axe and Fiddle) was a brand new pub with a beautiful stage, sharing it's walls with a bookstore and a bakery. After my gig I ended up sleeping on MJ Wiens' couch a local painter artist that I met that night. Him and his buddy Jeremy came to the show. MJ is a great artist from Oklahoma. DAY 8, Nov 8th : TO COTTAGE GROVE (OR) TO EUGENE (OR)Today it's my birthday and the last gig of my solo tour.I played at Diablo's, in Eugene that night, a 30 minute drive from Cottage Grove. A great band from Bakersfield, California, played just before me that night (http://www.myspace.com/veloriomusic). Just before there was a drag Queen party in the same club ! That afternoon I met this great cello player : Yoko (named after John Lenon's wife) who was king enough to play a few songs with me : |
8ème JOUR, 8 Nov : De COTTAGE GROVE (OR) à EUGENE (OR)Aujourd'hui c'est mon anniversaire et le dernier concert de ma tournée.Je jouais à Diablo's un club qui faisait salle de concert et simili strip club. Un groupe de Bakersfield, Californie, Velorio, avec des vibes à la Sergent Garcia ouvrait le bal de cette soirée, (http://www.myspace.com/veloriomusic). En fait pour être tout à fait exact la soirée avait commencé par un show de Drag Queen au sous sol du club. L'après midi du concert j'avais rencontré une violoncelliste qui acceptait gentiment de venir jouer le soir même sur certains de mes morceaux. Son nom était Yoko, nommée d'après la femme de John Lenon. |

Merci à tous ceux qui sont venus me voir en concert pendant cette tournée et à tous ceux qui m'ont gentiment accueillis et rendu cette aventure possible
